The
political system, which is similar to other states of India, ensures that
the State is governed by elected representatives. The State has a
unicameral Legislature consisting of 60 members ( 29 from Khasi Hills, 7
from Jaintia Hills and 24 from Garo Hills). Meghalaya is represented by 2
members in the Lok Sabha and by 1 member in the Rajya Sabha.
The
State has a unicameral legislature, called the Meghalaya Legislative
Assembly. The Legislative Assembly consists of Members elected directly by
the people from territorial constituencies in the State. Unless dissolved
earlier it continues for 5 years from the date appointed for its first
meeting. The Governor, from time to time, summons the Legislative Assembly
to meet at such time and place as he thinks fit, but the interval between
two sittings will not be more than 6 months. The Governor may from time to
time prorogue the Legislative Assembly.
The
Legislative Assembly chooses two members to be the Speaker and Deputy
Speaker respectively. The Speaker and, in his absence the Deputy Speaker,
presides over the proceedings of the Legislative Assembly. The Legislative
Assembly has a separate secretariat staff. The Assembly is responsible for
the legislation of the State according to the powers vested on it and for
such matters as is provided in the Constitution.
